The Six Villages Choir was
founded in 1979 by Richard Barnes, who is still our President.
We draw our membership from
Chichester, Bognor Regis and the surrounding area.
Although there is some dispute over which “six villages” we take
our name from, the consensus is Aldingbourne, Barnham, Eastergate, Slindon, Westergate & Yapton
We are affiliated to “Making
Music” (formerly the National Federation of Music Societies), and our Musical Director, Maureen Haines is a
regional committee member.
We normally give our
Christmas concert at Yapton Village Hall, our Easter concert at the United
Reformed Church (but see Diary), Bognor Regis, and our Summer concert at Walberton Village Hall.
Our usual pattern is to
perform one longer work in each concert, with a number of shorter items, often
with vocal and instrumental solos and readings.
In the last few years, we have performed Benedicite (Andrew Carter), items from The Creation (Haydn), Fantasia on Christmas Carols (Vaughan Williams), TheCrucufixion (Stainer), The Armed Man (Karl Jenkins), Mass in B flat (Hummel), Rumours of Angels (Graham Kendrick), and many shorter works by Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Handel, with concert versions of songs from the shows.
We are open to anyone, of
any age, who wants to sing our kind of music.
We do not ask for any particular standard of musical ability (though it
helps to be able to read music), nor do we require new members to take an
audition.
