The Six Villages Choir was founded in 1978 by Keith Clark and our first performance was of Stainer's Crucifixion at St Mary's. Slindon.
AT ST WILFRID'S, BOGNOR REGIS, NOVEMBER 2010
Martin Seath became our next Musical Director in 1982, then Richard Barnes, who is still our President, in 1988. Our present Musical Director is Maureen Haines who took up the reins in 1991.
We draw our membership from Chichester, Bognor Regis and the surrounding area. Although there is some dispute over which “six villages” we take our name from, the consensus is Aldingbourne, Barnham, Eastergate, Slindon, Walberton and Yapton.
We are affiliated to “Making Music” (formerly the National Federation of Music Societies), and our Musical Director, Maureen Haines is a regional committee member.
Our usual pattern is to perform one longer work in each concert, with a number of shorter items, often with vocal and instrumental solos and readings.
In the last few years, we have performed Benedicite (Andrew Carter), items from The Creation (Haydn), Fantasia on Christmas Carols (Vaughan Williams), TheCrucufixion (Stainer), The Armed Man (Karl Jenkins), Mass in B flat (Hummel), Rumours of Angels (Graham Kendrick), and many shorter works by Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Handel, with concert versions of songs from the shows.
We are open to anyone, of any age, who wants to sing our kind of music. We do not ask for any particular standard of musical ability (though it helps to be able to read music), nor do we require new members to take an audition.
